MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC), at a meeting on Friday, revoked its decision to club the house tax and garbage collection fees and decided to recruit 30 daily wage workers for garbage collection and restructure its commercial waste collection charges. It will also begin waste collection and segregation in the Margao wards on March 10 despite some houses being un-assessed.
“The MMC will go ahead with garbage collection from all houses. Because of the 20 percent un-assessed houses, the 80 percent assessed houses can’t be left out,” said Babita Angle, MMC Chairperson, adding that the MMC would not club the house tax and garbage fees, but would think about collecting the garbage fees with the house tax.
The CO has informed that he is communicating with the old bidders for assessing the houses.
The MMC has also decided to engage 30 more daily wage workers for the effective handling and collection of garbage and for the bailing facility.
“We will have to work out a proper revenue structure for a cost-effective appointment,” said Angle.
The MMC has also resolved to review and restructure the garbage collection fees of various establishments. Few councillors objected that small-time businessmen were being charged a lot of money.
Accordingly, the MMC suggested charging Rs 150 for barber shops, Rs 500 for beauty parlours and spas, and Rs 1,000 for larger establishments. The charges for large party halls have been reduced to Rs 2,500, while vegetable gadaas will be charged Rs 400. The charges for private hospitals (per bed) have been changed to Rs 6,000, 4,000, and 2,000, based on the size of operation.
The collection charges for Hospicio Hospital, Provedoria, orphanages and government schools and institutions have been waived, while private schools will be charged normally.
