MMC directed to stop dumping mixed waste

PANJIM, JAN 18 The Mapusa Municipal Council has been directed by the Goa State Pollution Control Board to stop dumping of unsegregated waste on the Assagao plateau and to prevent such acts put up fencing around the site.

The Mapusa Municipal Council has been directed by the Goa State Pollution Control Board to stop dumping of unsegregated waste on the Assagao plateau and to prevent such acts put up fencing around the site.   
In its directions issued as per the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the Council has been directed to stop dumping of the unsegregated waste and fence the area so as to provide 24 hour security to stop further he nuisance.
Shiv Sena had made a complaint to the Board in November alleging that unsegregated waste including plastic and rubber was being dumped and burnt on the plateau causing health hazards to residents of adjoining residential colonies.
GSPCB officials on conducting a site inspection in the same month concluded that the council had violated the Act. Directions issued in December had noted the Council was dumping unsegregated waste.
The Board had also asked the Chief Officer of the Council to show cause why action should not be initiated for causing environmental pollution in the Assagao plateau and its vicinity.
The GSPCB in the notice had also asked the chief officer of the Mapusa Municipal Council to show cause within a period of seven days as to why action should not be initiated against the Council for causing environmental pollution in the Assagao plateau and its vicinity.
The Board sent a copy to the deputy collector, North Goa as well as the director of municipal administration. Officials of the Board inform that the Council has already filed a response to the notice and that the Board is now going to verify the procedures the Council has said to have followed based on the GSPCB.
