MMC directs all hospitals to send waste to biomedical facility

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has directed all hospitals in Margao and Fatorda to send their sanitary waste to the biomedical waste facility at the Kundaim industrial Estate. Biotic Waste Solutions is the name of the company that handles such waste.

MMC Chief Officer (CO) Gaurish Shankhwalkar stated that a meeting was held with the representatives of hospitals in Margao/Fatorda and officials of the Biotic Waste Solutions firm to discuss the issue of disposal of sanitary waste including sanitary pads.

“The MMC used to collect sanitary waste from these hospitals but presently, we have no space to store them. Secondly, it becomes damp  during the collection in the monsoon and the weight increases. So, we have directed the hospitals to hand over the sanitary waste to the Biotic Waste Solutions from now on,” Shankhwalkar added.

The CO added that another meeting will be held with the hospital owners/representatives to address concerns that may arise with the processes involved for this plan.

The CO added that MMC is also trying to decentralise the waste disposal system and has recently started sending wet waste directly to the Saligao waste treatment plant as the Sonsodo site is at its full capacity.

Shankhwalkar added that the MMC is also strictly monitoring black spots in its jurisdiction so as to stop those persons, including those from neighbouring areas, from dumping waste at these spots.

MMC is facing pressure from the High Court which pulled up the civic body for its failure to handle the Sonsoddo garbage treatment and legacy dump site in an effective time-bound manner.
