Since last week, the MMC has intensified its drive against footpath encroachments. The chairperson has requested the businessmen and traders in the markets to keep the footpaths clear so that they have the ease of doing business.
The chairperson has also disclosed his decision of shifting all the small time fruit and other vendors to the old fish market. The old fish market will also be renovated by the Council, the estimates for which are being prepared.
A vendor at the market area said that all the vendors sitting beyond the market limits have to be accommodated inside the market for equal business opportunities to all. The vendor also demanded that no vendor be allowed to sit outside the limits of the market area.
“Our idea is to give facilities to the vendors who have been traditionally doing business without proper market area,” Gaonkar said .
Councillor Krishna Daji Salkar said that earlier there was lack of order in the municipal jurisdiction markets; however, after the new council took charge there has been improvement on the market fronts.
“We have made sure that the hindrances caused to the people are removed through the anti-encroachment drives and have shifted all vendors to the Old Fish Market today,” he said.
