MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council on Monday collected an amount of Rs 6000 by way of fines from various offenders from outside the municipal jurisdiction for disposing of waste in the city. Ever since the MMC’s solid waste management cell introduced the door-to-door waste collection system in the city, it has been monitoring various garbage disposal prone sites in the city and apprehended many people from the neighbouring villages while dumping huge quantities of waste in the city.
Member of MMC solid waste management cell, Savio Coutinho said the police would initially impose nominal fines on the offenders. However, the offenders are directed to produce a waste clearance receipt from the council, before the release of the attached vehicles, he said, adding, “Eventually the council has to clean up the mess created by the offenders.”
The solid waste management cell has appealed to the citizens of Margao to be vigilant and bring to the notice of the council any act of dumping of outside waste within municipal jurisdiction. Residents of Margao have also been requested not to dispose of the waste at places where the civic body has removed the bins.
