MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council led by the Chief Officer (CO) Siddhivinayak Naik and Municipal Engineer Manor Arsekar on Tuesday, raided 15 hotels in the city to oversee the segregated waste collection from these establishments.
The raid was conducted following complaints from the municipal staff that most hotels and restaurants were giving mixed waste when the vehicle went to collect the waste. As a punitive measure the mixed waste was not taken today.
The hoteliers were warned of severe action in future if they do not give segregated waste. The CO warning some of them that their establishment may even be sealed if they continue to give mixed waste.
MMC has already identified bulk waste generators who generate more than 100 kgs of waste every day and they have been issued notices already about segregating their waste. While dry waste would be collected only on Tuesdays and Fridays, wet waste will be collected every day.
Meanwhile, the Shadow Council for Margao appreciated the drive to collect segregated waste from hotels. They said it was brought to the notice of the Dy CM Vijai Sardesai when he visited Sonsoddo on May 6 that nearly 8 tonnes of waste is coming from hotels and if it delivered in segregated form, it would improve waste management. They further called for outlets serving tea and snacks and even soft drinks in the city to segregate their waste.
