MMC sees ray of hope in ministers visit to Sonsoddo dump yard

Monserrate, Rane along with concerned officials to take stock of garbage site today

MARGAO: Aiming to resolve the long pending issue, Minister for Waste Management Babush Monserrate will be visiting the Sonsoddo garbage site on Tuesday, and there are possibilities that Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane may also likely take stock of the situations.  All the issues pertaining to the Sonsoddo will be discussed.

People of Margao, besides Margao Municipality, are hoping that the ministers resolve the issue once and for all. After the intimation of the visits by ministers the civic body were noticed gearing up for the same on Monday. 

Besides, both the ministers, officials of Goa State Pollution Control Board, Goa State Waste Management Corporation, and all other concerned authorities will remain present at the site, which is scheduled at 11.30 am. 

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, besides Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco are also likely to be part of the visit on Tuesday. 

As informed by the Lyndon Pereira, Chairperson MMC there will be an overall presentation on the Sonsoddo dump yard, which will include past, present and future planning to resolve the Sonsoddo issue. 

“Yes, we have high hopes from the ministers who have recently taken charge of the departments”, he said. 

This visit by the ministers is considered as one of the important steps towards resolving the issue, wherein both Babush and Vishwajit had already shown interest in doing so. 

The recent incidents of fire at Sonsoddo has given alarming signs to the concerned authorities of a major disaster in future, if no solution is worked out, as the civic body is facing a tough time to tackle the issue for the last several decades. 

On the other hand MMC is still waiting to get the nod from the government to transport 10 tonnes of waste generated on a daily basis to Saligao Treatment Plant. 

“We have not yet received the approval from the government”, said the Chairperson.
