MMC surplus budget pegged at Rs 4.46 cr

The Standing Committee of the Margao Municipal Council on Thursday approved a surplus budget pegged at Rs 4.46 crore, even as the budget estimates for the first time has proposed to levy a fee of Rs 1 per day on every household for door-to-door collection of garbage.
At the meeting held on Thursday in the absence of the Chief Officer Prasanna Acharya, the panel deliberated the budget proposal before approving the estimates. The estimates will now be placed before the Council meeting scheduled later this month.
A perusal of the budget estimates for the financial year 2010-11 shows that the Civic body would tentatively earn revenue of Rs 15.96 lakh by way of levying of a fee of Rs 1 per day on every household for the collection of waste.
MMC Chairperson, Savio Coutinho, however, maintained that the fee would be levied only after the infrastructure is put in place and not April 1.
The Civic body has also set a target of Rs 6.25 lakh by way of collection of rent from mobile towers erected in the city by cell phone companies.
Of the Rs 32.70 crore revenue expected by the Civic body, the Municipality hopes to receive a grant-in-aid of Rs 19 crore from the government. The Civic body has set a target of Rs 6.72 crore by way of taxes and another Rs 4 crore as revenue derived from municipal properties.
On the expenditure front, the Civic body has allocated Rs 14 crore for development works, but the receipt of funds on this head will largely depend on the grant-in-aid from the government.
Out of Rs 19.20 crore showed on the receipt side, Rs 20 lakh represents installation and maintenance of computers, Rs 37.80 lakh represents salary to the Common Cadre staff; Rs 8 crore represents for the rehabilitation of mundkars existing in the area of pick-up stand at rehabilitation.
The Civic has earmarked Rs 86 lakh for the installation of bio-medical compactors in the city.
