MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council has finally decided to collect the sopo tax from the vendors
departmentally from Sunday midnight.
With the Civic body receiving a lone bid for sopo collection, the Municipal legal counsel advised the
body to re-auction the sopo, with a further advice not to grant extension for the incumbent sopo
contractor till further re-auctioning.
MMC officials said the council had received a lone bid which had quoted an amount of Rs 30.7 lakh as
against the upset price of Rs 23.32 lakh.
The tender was opened on March 13 and the file was forwarded to the Municipal Chairperson for advice
on how to go about in the matter. It is learnt that the chairperson cleared the file only on March 28,
leaving the administration little time to re-auction sopo before the commencement of the new financial
year.
“he civic body has decided to re-auction the sopo. Till the sopo contractor is finalized, the Sopo will be
collected departmentally,” said an MMC official.
He said the Civic body has deployed a team of five workers and earmarked them the areas for the
collection of the sopo tax from the vendors and vehicles.
