MARGAO: As Margao Municipal Council is going to commence collecting segregated waste from November 1, Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai has given Municipal Engineer Manoj Arsekar who has just taken charge, the responsibility of its successful implementation.
Admitting that there would be initial teething problems, she however asked the Municipal Engineer to be tough with the staff and particularly the sanitation section to ensure that segregated waste is collected in letter and spirit.
She disclosed that in the past excuses were given to scuttle door-to-door garbage collection. “There were complaints that there was a shortage of staff, so we have engaged more staff now and there should be no excuses given henceforth,” she said.
Pointing out that there is no garbage littering the streets of Fatorda section of the municipal jurisdiction, she said it was thanks to the transfer stations erected there by TCP Minister Vijai Sardessai through Corporate Social Responsibility.
She said around Rs 14 lakh will be spent to erect similar transfer stations in Margao section and added that each transfer station costs around Rs 30,000.
“We shall use some amount of the Rs 2.15 crore received under 14th Finance to repair our various machineries,” she said.
“We have discussed with the collector the problem of garbage from panchayats being dumped in the municipal area and very shortly a joint meeting with sarpanchas of the surrounding villages will be convened to solve this problem,” she said.
She disclosed that recently debris of a demolished house from Benaulim was caught being dumped in Margao.
