Vasco: Mormugao Municipal Council has decided to take action against illegal scrapyards operating in the residential areas. Goa First, an NGO has reiterated its demand to the MMC to arrange for removing the scrapyards in residential areas.
MMC chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar informed that the process to remove the scrapyards has commenced and notices will be issued soon.
The NGO Goa First had earlier submitted a memorandum to shift the scrapyards away from residential areas to industrial areas. Following the Colvale scrapyard and Margao Gandhi Market fire incidents, the NGO has reiterated its demand to shift the scrapyards.
Parshuram Sonurlekar of the Goa First said, “The scrapyards in MMC jurisdiction are in residential areas and have no proper access roads in case of fire like situations. They have to be shifted out to avoid any calamity arising out of fire incidents”.
MMC chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar said, “After the Colvale fire incident, I have asked the Chief Officer to conduct a survey of all scrapyards in residential areas and have asked the officer to issue notices”.
“There is circular that the scrapyards have to be moved out of the town. On that basis I have asked the Chief Officer to issue notices to the scrapyards and prepare to move them out of the town” he said.
The Chairperson reminded that notices were issued to scrapyards in 2014 but the then Chief Officer and Council failed to follow up on those notices.
