MARGAO: A day after mud excavation and transportation from the Sonsodo waste dumping site came to a complete halt, representatives of Margao-based organisations on Friday called on Margao Municipal Chairperson Dayanand Deulkar and demanded early completion of the Sonsodo waste treatment project.
The delegation comprising of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal president Chetan Acharya, President of Margao gadda traders Prashant Naik, residents of Amrutnagar led by Sidhanath Buyao pointed out that the civic body should go ahead with the Sonsodo project and not fall prey to the machinations of a handful of individuals.
President of Margao gadda traders Prashant Naik later told the media that the delegation impressed upon the Municipal Chairperson not to buckle under pressure, but to remain firm and get the project completed within a set time frame. “The civic body should take the initiative and ensure that the waste plant is completed on time. The waste treatment project is a major project undertaken by the civic body in the town. Sadly, we have been only hearing during the last two years that the project would be completed soon, but in vain,” Naik said, while lamenting that certain forces from beyond the jurisdiction of Margao were trying to stall the project on flimsy grounds.
He said the municipality should remain firm and ensure that the project is not stalled with cooperation and coordination of the police and district authorities. “We will return back to the civic body to ascertain the status of work at Sonsodo,” he said, while expressing satisfaction that the civic chief has reiterated his commitment for the early completion of the project.
Meanwhile, president of Amchem Goem, Amcho Lok Felix Dias has reiterated that hill cutting at Sonsodo has been going on beyond the permissible limits. “We have till date not received any reply from Fomento Green on our grievances. Neither Fomento nor any of the authorities have bothered to explain to us,” he said.
