MMC wants to hire company running Saligao plant to clear Sada garbage

VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to hire the agency running the Saligao garbage treatment plant to clear the over 80,000 tonnes of untreated garbage dumped at its Sada plant.

This decision was taken during an inspection of Sada garbage treatment plant held on Friday, by top municipal officials and Power Minister MLA Milind Naik.
The inspection team was informed that the Sada plant has over 80,000 tonnes of mixed garbage which needs to be shifted or treated before going ahead with the up-gradation of the plant.
To this, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik informed that the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) has already issued work order to an agency to shift all the garbage from and clear the Sada plant within 18 months, however, the agency concerned failed to start the work and even failed to deposit bank guarantee (mandatory as per contract).
Minister Naik intervened saying that he had already directed the municipality to seek permission of the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) for hiring the Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd (HWTPL) that operates the Saligao plant, which can clear all the garbage from the Sada plant within six months.
“As per the direction of the MLA, we have already written to the DMA seeking his permission to hire HWTPL for clearing the existing garbage at Sada. However, before hiring the new agency, we will have to terminate the work order issued to the agency appointed by GSUDA which does not appear easy. Nevertheless, we are hopeful that the government would come out a solution this legal hurdle,” said MMC Chief Officer Deepali Naik.
