VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council employees and labourers on Saturday decided to hold a strike over the issue of non payment of their daily wages/salary for the month of July, on Monday.
The All Goa Municipal Employee’s Association has written a letter to the Chief Officer of the MMC bringing this issue to his notice and has demanded to release their salaries.
In the letter, General Secretary Vasudev Dhawadkar stated that it has been brought to the notice of the authorities that the MMC has not paid the daily wages/salaries of all its labourers, employees for the month of July, when they are facing hardship due to COVID pandemic.
The association further mentioned that if the MMC fails in releasing the salaries and daily wages of July 2020, by August 7, all the workers will have no option but to halt their regular works from Monday, August 10.
Commenting on this issue, Vice Chairperson Reema Sonurlekar revealed that she along with the chairperson was present when the employees’ association members handed over the letter to the Chief Officer.
She said, “Two issues have hampered the MMC finances, one is poor recovery by the council due to ongoing pandemic and no annual Saptah this year which would have brought revenue to the council’s coffers.”
Sonurlekar informed that the council is trying to figure out how they can release the salaries and daily wages.
