MMC workers want wage hike

Say late payment of salaries makes life difficult

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council daily wages workers who clear the filth and garbage and keep the town clean to make life a little pleasant for citizens, sadly have been paid meagre wages for many years now. The workers who pick garbage are paid a meagre sum of Rs 221 per day while the municipal vehicle drivers get Rs 300 per day.
The workers have demanded that their wages be increased to Rs 300 and Rs 350 for drivers, respectively. Former chairperson of Margao Municipal Council Savio Coutinho has taken up the demand of wage hike for these workers with the MMC chief officer, who he said, has reacted positively to the workers’ demands.
The MMC daily wage workers, who are responsible for collecting the garbage and filth from the town and keep the town clean, are apparently the ‘lowest and least’ among the workers of the MMC. Councillor Savio Coutinho says their wages are too less for the nature of work they do. He also says that the workers being temporary do not get washing or garbage allowance which is given to other permanently employed workers.
Coutinho informed that in recent times the workers have been getting their salaries very late and it is getting increasingly difficult for the workers to support their families. Coutinho informed that the chief officer has replied positively to the demands of the workers.
