PANJIM: Strengthening of the fire force through filling of vacancies and training, and modernisation through upgradation of infrastructure and equipment is expected through Central Assistance from 2013-2017, as stated at the Fire Services Day celebrations of the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services on Tuesday.
The department recently promoted 128 personnel of various ranks and is awaiting government approval and filling of these posts left vacant by promotions is also on the cards.
Speaking at the 25th Annual Inspection Day Parade held at the Fire Force Headquarters ground Chief Secretary B Vijayan said that the department’s proposal is under government’s consideration. “The operational posts vacant for a long time are being looked into,” he said after inspecting the parade, also attended by IAS officers and government officials.
Director Ashok Menon, in his address had earlier said that the department curtailed the acute stagnancy in various ranks through the recent promotions.
“The operational staff works without availing public holidays which are available to other government staffers,” he said. Menon also informed that a proposal to grant 13th month pay on the lines of Delhi Fire Services to compensate for the loss of holidays is awaiting clearance from the government. The government has in principle also agreed to an insurance scheme for those who suffer disability or succumb in the line-of-duty.
Besides, Menon said, Central Assistance for ‘Modernisation of Fire and Emergency Services in the Country’ is expected from the period 2013-17, covering infrastructure for new fire stations, equipment, personnel and training.
Awards for various drill competitions, best maintained fire appliances and best turn out were given.
Menon prided in the fact that the department is maintaining a healthy tradition of monthly parades which ensures that the personnel at field level remain operationally fit.
Later speaking to the media, Menon informed that a proposal had been sent to the Administrative Reforms Department for strengthening the force, and another proposal for starting a co-operative credit society by the staff members was also submitted to the government.
