PANJIM: Over a year and four extensions later, the 17-member Medium of Instruction (MoI) committee constituted to advise the government on grants to English medium primary schools, is yet to submit its report.
The committee, constituted in July 2016 and given 120 days to submit its report, has now sought a fifth extension to its term. The panel is yet to hold its state-level consultative meeting.
Speaking to Herald, committee member Nagaraj Honnekeri said, “The first 12 meetings were to be conducted at the taluka level, and have been completed. Now we have another two consultative meetings to be conducted in North and South Goa along with the stakeholders after which we will need another month to compile and submit the report.”
The committee recently asked the government for another extension of 45 days to hold the two consultative meeting in North and South Goa and compile and submit the report. This will be the fifth extension since the inception of the committee.
Honnekeri said, “These two meetings could not be held due to the Goa Assembly Elections, Panchayat elections and then the bypolls. Soon after these meeting we will compile the report and submit it to the government. We have now asked for another extension of 45 days.”
When the panel was formed in July last year, it had been asked by to submit its report on what the medium of instruction should be at the primary level in Goa. The deadline for the report was set for the first week of November last. In November, the committee sought an extension of 90 days, which was granted and the report was to be submitted on February 2.
