Parrikar gives mining top priority, but Medium a miss

PANJIM: Over a month since the controversial Medium of Instruction policy was referred to the Goa Assembly’s select committee headed by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, the Committee has not met even once till date. The issue of Medium of Instruction at the primary school level, was one of the issues that helped the BJP to come to power after the March 2012 Assembly elections.
Sources at the Secretariat level confirmed that the eight-member committee has not met even once as the Chief Minister was busy sorting out the mining issue. “For now, Chief Minister has prioritized the mining issue. He was busy drafting the mining lease policy and sorting out other legalities related to the issue. He would probably look into the matter after settling the mining crisis,” sources said.
The other members of the committee include Nilesh Cabral, Dr Pramod Sawant, Kiran Kandolkar, Rajan Naik, Lavoo Mamledar, Mauvin Godinho and Digambar Kamat.
During the recent State Legislative Assembly’s monsoon session, Parrikar as the Education Minister had tabled the Goa School Education (amendment) Bill 2014, incorporating the MoI policy. The policy that was supposed to be implemented during the ongoing academic year as announced by Parrikar, has now been delayed.
