Monsoon winds up with 14% deficient rainfall

Season was satisfactory and deficit is within normal range, says IMD director

PANJIM: The monsoon season in Goa has finally ended with a total of 100.6 inches of rainfall as compared to the normal 116.9 inches with a deficit of 14 per cent.
The meteorological centre in 2016 recorded a rainfall of 2,957.6 mm (116.4 inches) from June to September, as compared to the normal rain fall of 2,971.7 mm (117 inches)
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) the monsoon season in Goa was satisfactory.
Speaking to Herald, IMD-Goa, Director, M L Sahu said, “The monsoon in Goa has still not withdrawn. Only for statistical purpose the season is ended. IMD only considers 4 months season. The season was satisfactory and the deficit was within the normal range.”
“The basic reason for the less rainfall this year was that in the month of July, the State received 25 percent less rainfall and this is due to less activeness of the offshore trough which generally continues for many days off the west coast of Maharashtra to Kerala,” he said.
However, the late arrival of the monsoon and scarce rainfall has left the State with a deficit of 14 percent in the average seasonal rainfall for the period from June 1 to September 30. As per data with IMD, Goa received 100.6 inches of rainfall in this period against the average of 116.9 inches.
The IMD officials further said that cumulative rainfall from June 1 to September 30 was 2,557.3 mm as against the normal precipitation of 2,917.7 mm, which was 14 percent less than the normal rainfall.
