More sewage connection in Margao …hopefully

The former CM Kamat intends to launch a house to house campaign to promote this program

MARGAO: Former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat while appealing to Margao residents to take sewage connections, said if the department did not implement his proposal, he would shortly be launching a door to door campaign to promote sewage connections.
Briefing media persons he said all the work of installing manholes and preparing the sewerage network is complete in Margao except for a small portion near ESI Hospital and at Rawanfond and added that sewerage connections will be given soon after the Ganesh festival.
He said while the corporation can give 1062 sewerage connections, it has received only 430 applications of which 296 are already connected and the other connections will be given after Ganesh festival. “While in Aquem 90 per cent households are connected to the sewerage system, in Malbhat only four houses are connected,” he said.
Pointing out that under the Sewerage Act it is mandatory for all houses to be connected, he said he had suggested a scheme to the government which has been accepted positively and said that if they do not implement it soon, he would be launching a door to door campaign all over Margao with the councilors to get people to take sewerage connection.
He said he has proposed that the sewerage corporation connect all households to the network and recover the payable amount through the water supply bill which proposal he said the concerned departments have accepted.
He also said there was a need to make sewerage connection mandatory by bringing it under health as water and electricity connection can be released on grounds of health.
He also disclosed that the roads will be repaired as soon as the sewerage connections are given and added that it would take about a month to release the sewerage connections. He admitted that at many places the area around the manholes have caved and need immediate attention.
As for the bad condition of the National Highway in Margao he said the contractor has promised to re-do the hot mixing the moment the monsoons are over. “Anyway the roads in Margao will be attended to before the end of the current year,” he said.
