VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has now decided to request the government to shift the council’s waste from Headland Sada to the Saligao garbage treatment plant, which at present has remained underutilised.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the launch of seven mini pickups given by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) to MMC for lifting garbage from its jurisdiction, MMC chairperson Deepak Naik said, “The State administration has cleared all hurdles for upgradation of municipal solid waste management plant (MSWMP) at Headland Sada, and it has also tendered the work of shifting the existing garbage from the Sada plant.”
“However, MMC cannot handle the situation prevailing at Sada plant,” he said.
“The Saligao garbage treatment plant is being underutilized and Mormugao Municipal Council’s garbage can easily be shifted there. This would ensure that the Saligao plant would be used to its handling capacity thereby providing a major relief to the council, he added.
“It is known fact that our MSWMP at Headland Sada has heaps of garbage which has remained untreated for years together. Now, our upgradation plans cannot be taken up until the existing waste is shifted to some other place. This will be a win-win situation for Saligao plant having capacity to treat 200 tonnes of garbage, and also for us, if government allows us to shift our garbage to Saligao plant for treatment,” he said.
Naik said, “We have now decided to approach the State government with a request to permit us to shift our existing garbage to Saligao plant.”
Meanwhile, after launching seven mini pickups provided by the GSUDA to lift garbage from all 25 wards, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida reassured the people that ‘Garbage Free Vasco’ Mission would be fulfilled within the stipulated October 2 deadline this year.
