Mormugao Council unanimously opposes marina project amid coal pollution fear

VASCO: The special meeting of the Mormugao Municipal Council on Tuesday addressed issues of pollution stemming from coal handling activities and the proposed marina project.

Chairperson Girish Borker announced that the council unanimously decided to lend its support to the community opposing the marina project. Regarding coal pollution in the port town, councillors from the Sada area expressed serious concerns.

Borker clarified that the council is not against any business operations as they provide employment opportunities, but emphasised the need for companies to undertake measures to minimise pollution during coal handling and transportation.

Councillor Fredrick Henriques raised concerns about the menace of stray cattle in the port town. It was agreed to liaise with the agency previously tasked with removing stray cattle from roads.

The meeting also addressed the revision of rates applicable within the municipality following the reassessment of houses within its jurisdiction. Borker appealed to all councillors and the three MLAs to extend full cooperation in conducting the reassessment drive.
