Mormugao Council unanimously resolve to back battle to oppose Mhadei diversion

VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council on Wednesday unanimously resolve to support the government in the battle against Karnataka to oppose the diversion of Mhadei waters.

Mormugao Municipal Council Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said that the council will conduct awareness activities on the need to preserve Mhadei River in high schools and colleges situated in the municipal jurisdiction. He said that the council has full faith in Chief Minister Pramod Sawant that he will not allow Karnataka to divert Mhadei waters at any cost.

Rodrigues said that Mhadei River is our lifeline and diverting its water will be adverse impact on ecology and flora and fauna and destroy plantations and fields in most of the areas in the State. He also claimed that the Mormugao municipal council is the first council to pass the resolution on Mhadei River.

Councillor Shami Salkar said that Mhadei River dispute between the two neighbouring States is going on for the last three decades and the sudden approval of Karnataka’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) has caused more concern to the people of the State. She said that the Karnataka’s moves will be foiled and expressed confidence that the State will get justice in the Supreme Court.
