VASCO: The newly tarred road leading to the Chowgule office in Mormugao Harbour has started showing sign of distress with cracks on the road portion visible and increasing the possibility of landslides.
According to the locals, the cracks on the road near Mormugao Harbour started developing in the last few weeks. They however became more prominent with the onset of the monsoons. They now fear the road which leads to the harbour Church and Chowgule office might face landslides as the soil underneath the road is loose due to the rains. To prevent vehicles from plying on the distressed portion of the road, locals have placed laterite stones. This however poses a danger at night since there are no signs to indicate their presence.
“This road was constructed several decades ago and was recently tarred, however since last few weeks the road has started showing sign of distress with huge cracks have already started taking place. At some point the road has caved inside and to avoid any possibility of a landslide, we demand the concerned PWD department should take immediate steps and repair the road. What is more important is the fact that the road is built very close to the cliff of harbor hill and if repairs are not taken up on a priority then there are high possibilities of major landslides in the area,” said Sandeep Patel, a Vasco resident.
