MARGAO: Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar filed a complaint to Colva Police against INDIA Bloc candidate Capt Viriato Fernandes for disrespecting the Constitution of India at a public meeting held in Benaulim.
He complained that Capt Viriato had committed an offence under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insults to the National Honour Act, 1971 and hence asked the police to register an FIR against the candidate.

The MLA demanded the police investigate the matter thoroughly to unearth the intention of the candidate for making the said attacks on the Constitution.
The complaint states that Capt Viriato referred to his conversation with then Congress president Rahul Gandhi on March 10, 2019 and telling him that the Indian Constitution was forced upon Goans when Goa was liberated on December 19, 1961 by Jawaharlal Nehru.
Capt Viriato further while pointing out that Nehru had promised to let Goans decide their own destiny, allowed someone else to decide their destiny, said MLA Amonkar in his complaint.
The MLA said that the Congress candidate said at the said meeting that Goa was not party to the January 26, 1960, decision to implement the Constitution of India as it was not part of the nation then.
“The above statements disrespect the disregard the sacrosanct Constitution of India and hence is punishable under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insults to the National Honour Act, 1971,” reads the complaint.
Colva police while disclosing that no complaint has been registered as yet, said the case is being investigated.
