VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson on Tuesday assured the workers to resolve their payment issue by Wednesday.
The chairperson requested the MMC workers, who held a strike on Monday, to resume their duties and gave assurance that they will receive their salaries by Wednesday afternoon.
Since the MMC workers have went on strike on Monday, the municipal area wore an ugly look as the black spots including the dustbins were seen overflowing with the garbage. The workers have been facing the financial uncertainty since last eight months due to the delayed payment as they claimed.
On Tuesday, the MMC workers continued with their strike as they did not receive their salaries for the July month. The workers were firm on their stand that until they do not receive their salaries they will continue with the strike.
Later, when contacted Councillor Fredrick Henriques revealed that Chairperson Nandadeep Raut along with the Chief Officer Arvind Bugde met Director of Municipal Administration and got the solution to this issue. Both of them later met the workers and assured them about their salaries and requested to resume their work.
Commenting on the issue, Chairperson Raut put the blame on the poor recovery due to COVID-19 pandemic.
He said that almost 80 per cent of the MMC’s revenue has gone into deficit during the crises.
Raut although revealed that he met five workers and requested them to start their work from Wednesday and assured them that their salaries will be deposited by Wednesday afternoon in their bank accounts.
