PANJIM: The Directorate of Municipal Administration, Government of Goa and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs under the Ministry of Power, have signed an agreement on August 11 in Panjim to determine energy saving potential through Investment Grade Energy Audit (IGEA) reports for implementation of energy efficiency projects in the public water works and sewerage systems in the state.
The agreement was signed between J Ashok Kumar, director, Directorate of Municipal Administration and Uttam Kumar, National Programme Manager, Municipal Energy Efficiency Programme, EESL.
The programme is financed by Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the ADB support is provided under a $200 million loan agreement signed with EESL, to finance high-priority areas under EESL’s energy service company (ESCO) business, including energy efficiency projects in the pumping sector under AMRUT.
Speaking on the occasion, J Ashok Kumar, said, the Goa government is committed to making the state 100 per cent energy efficient, and we therefore welcome EESL to evaluate the possibility of implementation of energy efficiency projects at the municipal pump sets in the State.
The State and EESL are already working together to replace all the existing conventional streetlights with LED streetlights and already more than 1.75 lakh number of LED streetlights have been installed. I assure EESL that we shall provide all possible assistance in carrying out energy audit for the municipal pumps smoothly. With this partnership, the Government is confident of a win-win situation for every stakeholder, and Goa shall emerge as a strong contributor to India’s successful energy efficiency story, he added.
Out of these 1.75 lakh, about 2000 have been replaced as they got affected due to monsoon.
As per the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) General Review 2016, electricity sale in the public water works and sewerage systems area in Goa was estimated at 143 million units. Therefore, at an average energy saving potential of 25 per cent, it is estimated that through the replacement of old inefficient pump sets in these public water works and sewage systems, approximately 36 million units shall be saved each year, which will result in an annual monetary savings of over Rs 23 crore. This shall lead to an avoidance of over 25 MW peak demand, while also reducing over 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum.
