VASCO: Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) on Sunday received its largest cargo carrying ship till date, the M V DHUN, the Japanese manufactured ship which made a virgin call on the port bringing about 1,04,000 tonnes of cargo.
The entire cargo will be dispatched from the port in less than 3 days by rail.
MPT Chairman P Mara Pandiyan visited the ship along with senior officials of the port, officials of South West Port Limited and ship agent, Manubai Thakkar of M/s Hiralal & Co.
Pandiyan congratulated all the crew members of the ship for all their efforts in bringing the large vessel to the port. He also assured them that the port would extend all cooperation in receiving larger vessels.
Mormugao Port Trust has been systematically expanding its operations by attracting new commodities to the port. After the monsoon, massive dredging operations were carried out to enable international ships of any size to call at MPT. The port maintains an all round channel length of 14.5 mtrs and inner harbour draft of 14.5 mtrs. On the west coast of India, MPT is the only port which maintains higher draft for navigating vessels of any size. The maintenance of higher draft has sent the green signal to various liners from around the world to dispatch larger cargo to MPT, stated the press note.
