VASCO: Union Minister of State for Tourism, Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shripad Naik on Friday expressed confidence that the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) could earn profit if the cargo quantity is increased.

Naik also assured to provide all necessary help to strengthen the financial condition of the port.
The Union Minister, who inaugurated “The Pier” at the International Cruise Terminal, at Mormugao Harbour, while interacting with the media persons said, “Several proposals related to tourism under the Tourism Scheme have gone to the Centre. The State government will also emphasise to have a good infrastructure which is much needed for the tourism industry in Goa.”
He further mentioned that certain tourism related schemes were kept on hold for review purposes and therefore few projects couldn’t be sanctioned in the past. But now the review of these schemes has been done.
When questioned about the MPT’s financial condition, Naik revealed that the recently stopped container service will be resumed and the required machinery such as mechanised crane etc for this service will be also provided by utilising funds from the tourism sector.
He also added that in the past the port has made profit and as a Shipping Minister whatever help is needed to strengthen the port’s financial condition will be provided.
