MARGAO: Residents of Mungul, Colva and Madel held a ‘rasta roko andolan’ on the Mungul-Betalbatim road to protest against the PWD’s lackadaisical attitude towards urgent work on the same road. The group, under the banner ‘Residents of Mungul’ was assisted by Margao Municipal Council (MMC) ex-chairperson Gonzaco Rebello.
The Mungul-Betalbatim road is very narrow and has trenches on its sides that have killed or injured many commuters. The PWD’s work consisted of building retaining walls on the sides of the road, widening, tarring, laying pavers, and building drains. Mungul residents had even given up land for the road widening.
“The work has been pending for almost a year now, and this time the people are not in a mood to duck down. There will be a bigger agitation if the work doesn’t start by Sunday,” said Rebello
Meanwhile, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Ajit Panchwadkar said he would intervene in the matter and assured to get the works done soon. “The area is a flood-prone zone, hence we can’t take a risk. The work of pitching and putting rubbles will be taken up on a war footing, but it needs a week’s time to be execute properly.”
