MAPUSA: In a bid to get residents to store wet and dry garbage separately, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to supply two 5-litre black and green bins to all households in Mapusa.
Speaking to Herald, MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari informed that MMC has already distributed leaflets to all the households, requesting them to cooperate with the MMC to dispose off garbage by separating wet and dry garbage in the colour-coded bins, which would be supplied to them.
“Presently, MMC collects unsegregated garbage on a door-to-door basis and it is later segregated separately. We have employed 25 labourers for this task, but the segregation does not take place as desired,” said Falari and added that the residents have been requested to hand over the dry and wet garbage separately to the MMC.
“MMC requires 20,000 bins each for dry and wet garbage to be distributed to all the households. The Goa State Urban Development Agency has agreed to provide these bins and they have already supplied 7,000 bins each for wet and dry garbage,” he informed.
“MMC has started distributing the bins to the households and residents have been requested to keep wet garbage like fish, meat, kitchen waste, etc, in the green bin and dry garbage like paper, plastic bags, etc, in the black bin. MMC will collect wet garbage every day from each house, while dry garbage will be collected on alternate days, that is, Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” said Falari.
