With rumours rife that he is all set to introduce his pilot son Yuri into electoral politics, Cuncolim MLA and Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao scotched all such reports, saying his son may succeed him only after his retirement.
“There’s no way Yuri will contest the next Assembly polls from Cuncolim or anywhere else when I will stand for re-election from the constituency”, Joaquim asserted.
The Minister, however, hastened to add that Yuri has been actively involved in social work not only in Cuncolim constituency, but elsewhere.
The rumour mill was active throughout Tuesday with Yuri’s birthday being the talk of the Town on account of the congratulatory messages in the media, followed by a free Konkani Tiatr near the bus stand. Incidentally, the vernacular media had reported a fortnight ago that the Urban Development Minister may shift to Sanguem and field his son in Cuncolim.
Addressing a Tiatr function, Joaquim said that he will have to take permission of the people of Cuncolim to contest from Sanguem. “But, I would prefer to retire from politics instead of contesting from Sanguem”, he said.
adding that whatever works pending in Cuncolim would then be carried out by his son Yuri.
He told the gathering that if his son Yuri is tirelessly serving the society, it is because of his love for the people and not to contest the polls. “We are forever indebted to the people of Cuncolim for my election. I have vowed to make Cuncolim a modern town”, Alemao said, adding that he would complete the pending works.
In his brief address at the Tiatr function, Yuri said he is indebted to the people for showering their love and him and the Alemao family.
While thanking the organizers of the Tiatr at Cuncolim on his birthday, Yuri said he would always work for the betterment and upliftment of people of Cuncolim.
