Naming auditorium after Savarkar is a betrayal: NCP

PANJIM: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Goa said that naming the main auditorium of Vasco Ravindra Bhavan after Veenayak Damodar Savarkar is a betrayal of Goan artists and that Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to impose RSS ideologies on Goans.

NCP Goa unit President Jose Philip D’Souza said, “We don’t know him. Who is Savarkar? From where is he, is he a Goan or from which country?” NCP asked what was Savarkar’s contribution to Goa that led to naming the auditorium after him. D’Souza said Goa is acclaimed for its rich art and culture and has produced a number of great personalities in the fields.
NCP Goa vice-president Trajano D’Mello said it is a betrayal of Goan artists who belong to a rich tradition of culture, music and vocals.
“We were not demanding the auditorium be named on any caste, creed or religion. We just wanted the name of a Goan personality for the auditorium,” D’Mello said.
D’Mello said BJP is desperate to thrust RSS leaders on Goa. “First the government named indoor stadium after Shyamaprasad Mukherji and now the auditorium after Savarkar. NCP appeals to the Art and Culture Minister to rename the main auditorium,” D’Mello said.
NCP suggested the names of Mogubai Kurdikar, Anjalibai Malpekar, Girijabai Kelkar, Layabhaskar Laxmanrao alias Khaprumam Parvatkar, Shridhar Parsekar, Pandit Ratnakant Ramnathkar, Pt Yeshwant Vithal Naik alias Vallemama, Sakharambapu Barve, Pt Vinayak Bandodkar, Pt Pandemama Mageshikar, Pt Pandharinath Gangadhar Nageshkar, Nirmala Pai Kakode, Raghuvir Vishnu Nayak Namshikar.
