BICHOLIM: In a gruesome incident reported at Narvem-Bicholim, a man allegedly buried alive his ailing wife after being frustrated over her illness.
According to the available information, the incident came to light on Thursday morning when some workers were levelling the mud at Marmawada, Narvem in Bicholim taluka, which was dug up for construction of Tillari Canal. As the work was in progress, 46-year-old accused Tukaram Shetgaonkar; a resident of Narvem visited the spot and tried to restrict the workers from carrying out their work at the site. Despite arguments, the workers continued with their work and were shocked to find a body in the loose mud.
On noticing the body, Tukaram got nervous and fled. Bicholim Police swung into action and after inquiring with the workers they suspected Tukaram’s involvement. Tukaram was summoned at the police station and during interrogation he confessed to the heinous crime.
The accused said he buried his wife 44-year-old Tanvi Shetgaonkar as she was suffering from some illness and was bedridden. He further confessed that he was frustrated with Tanvi’s illness as he was unable to treat her any further due to financial constraints and hence decided to take this extreme step.
He said on Wednesday, he decided to kill his wife and chose to bury her in the mud that was dug up for construction of Tillari Canal. Accordingly, he took Tanvi to the site and buried her alive, thinking that no one would ever find her. However, on Thursday, when he saw the workers digging at the same place where he had buried his wife, Tukaram panicked and began arguing with the workers. The police later arrested him.
On receiving the information, SP North Utkrisht Prasoon and DySP Gurudas Gawade inspected the site and took stock of the situation.
Police arrested Tukaram under Sections 302 and 201 of IPC.
Tanvi’s body has been preserved in the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. Bicholim police are investigating the case under the guidance of PI Sanjay Dalvi.
