They claimed that while students studying at the Dharbandora College pay a meagre fee of about Rs 5000 for the BBA/BCA course, students from other colleges across the state have to pay a fee amounting to Rs 40,000 for the same course. “This is a grave injustice done to the student community who want to pursue the BBA/BCA course since they have to pay nearly eight times more than the students of Dharbandora College,” remarked Swaraj Pati.
The students further pointed out that the number of students getting enrolled in the BBA/BCA courses has come down drastically due to the rise in the fees over the past few years, with some colleges not even able to fill up half the allotted seats.
“Not only the future of the students but also the faculty is at stake since many colleges are contemplating to stop the course, due to poor enrolment since students are in no position to cough up the huge costs in offering this self financed course”, stated another student Pranav Korde said.
The students demanded that the government take urgent steps to ensure that the course continues in the interest of the student community by providing grants to the colleges offering the course.
“The BBA/BCA course is gaining wide spread popularity in other states, especially in neighbouring Karnataka and Maharashtra since it helps students get an entry into MBA programs in various institutes in the country”, he added.
Korde claimed that the college managements have supported their cause, adding that a delegation of the students will soon call on GU Vice-Chancellor with their grievances. They have urged the government to take the students community into confidence on the issue and accept their demand for grant in aid to the colleges offering the BBA/BCA courses.
