Navigation staff to intensify stir

PANJIM: The Government of India Navigation Employees Union (Goa) has demanded that the suspension of five coxswains be revoked, failing which they would intensify their strike.

The union held a dharna outside the Captain of Ports office on Monday protesting the suspension of Francisco Araujo, Sebastiao Jose Antao, Laxmikant Phadte, Shridhar Phadte and Benjamin Das Nevis Joao.
The members demanded that the suspensions be revoked or all staff who participated in the October 12 strike be suspended. The union is contemplating submitting a memorandum to CoP, giving it 21 days to heed to their demands, failing which they will intensify their strike.
“We will shut ferry services for 24 hours,” one of the members said.
The flotilla staff had suspended ferry services for two hours on October 12. Captain James Braganza said the suspension is a disciplinary action, particularly because the five persons had manhandled other staffers.
