MARGAO: The Cuncolim Civic and Consumer Forum (CCCF) has sought action by government agencies in respect of stray cattle on the national highway and called for appointing a separate agency for South Goa to tackle this menace endangering the lives of road users.
In a letter to the Director, Directorate of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Dr B Braganza, the forum has welcomed the idea of having an agency to impound cattle from the roads as per the advertisement issued by DAHVS dated 3rd June 2013 where it was stated that a service to impound stray cattle will be undertaken by the Corporation of the City of Panaji from 15th June, 2013 onwards.
The forum, however, pointed out that if the service has to be effective then the agency must operate out of South Goa so that the service can be quick and effective. Copies of the letters have been sent to the Director of Transport, SP Traffic Police Cell, Directorate of Municipal Administration and GOACAN.
In a similar letter to the South Goa Collector N D Agrawal, the CCCF has called for his intervention to get an agency appointed for South Goa so that the impounding of cattle can be effectively carried out from Cortalim to Canacona and would cover the talukas of Salcete, Mormugao, Dharbandora, Quepem, Canacona and Sanguem.
Meanwhile, the forum has sought the urgent intervention of Salcete Mamlatdar to address the current problem of stray cattle on the national highway at Cuncolim and take steps to ensure road safety in the interest of two-wheeler riders and other road users whose life is in danger.
