Need to make bureaucrats accountable: Union ministers

PANJIM: Stating that the bureaucracy needs to be made accountable, Union ministers Manohar Parrikar (Defence), Nitin Gadkari (Road Transport and Highway) and Suresh Prabhu (Railway) stressed on the need to conduct performance audits of bureaucrats.

The Union ministers in the Narendra Modi cabinet believe that “ultimately it is the responsibility of the political leaders to change the problem lying with the bureaucracy”.
The ministers were speaking at the IIT Global Business Forum, wherein on Saturday the keynote address was on ‘India’s road map towards energy independence for the next ten years’.
“There is need to have more transparency and accountability in the bureaucracy… performance audit of the bureaucrats is very important,” Gadkari said.
Stressing on administrative reforms, Gadkari said that the responsibility lies with the political leaders to bring in change within the bureaucracy.
Supporting him, Parrikar said he doesn’t agree with the allegations that the bureaucracy in the NDA government is a problem. “I admit that it (bureaucracy) had wrong colour and odour but now it’s changing colour… one cannot bring the change overnight, but yes, it is changing,” he said.
Railway Minister Prabhu felt there is a need to bring in a change in the system, by making every government sector outcome oriented.
The session was attended by wide range of IITians from across the country.
