PANJIM: New fire spots are emerging every time even after the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Mi-17 helicopter has managed to douse existing fires, the IAF sources told O Heraldo on Thursday.
“We addressed fire at four sites on Thursday and dispensed 22,000 litres of water for it. We are trying our best to douse the fire, but every time we are doing a sortie, we are finding new fire spots emerging. That’s the ground reality. However, the ground staff would be in a better position to inform about the situation after we have doused the fire,” the IAF sources said.
After deploying a Mi-17 helicopter for fire fighting in Kochi on March 7, the IAF has deployed one Mi-17 helicopter for Bambi Bucket operations in the fire affected areas in Goa.
The IAF said, “Thursday’s operations have seen this helicopter flying multiple missions to fight the fire. The IAF is coordinating closely with the Indian Navy and the civil administration in this regard.” “Bambi Bucket operations involve the helicopter carrying water underslung and releasing it over the affected area to douse the fire,” the IAF stated in an official statement.
In the recent past, IAF has also undertaken similar operations in Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Manipur.
