Margao: Fisheries minister Avertano Furtado announced the government will soon construct minor fishery harbours at three places namely Chapora-Bardez, Malim-Betim and Cutbona-Velim. He said that the government has already carried out preliminary survey and prepared project report for the three projects.
The facilities to be provided at the Malim minor fishery harbour will be a jetty of 64 mts length and 6 mts breadth, two open platforms, slipway/boat repair ramp, land reclamation, revetment, fish handling and auction hall, fish loading area, internal road, parking areas for vehicles, administrative office, fishermen gear shed, net mending shed, fishermen rest shed, boat repair shop, freshwater supply distribution system, electric power and lighting system, radio communication tower/room, firefighting equipment, rainwater harvesting, drainage/sewerage, waste water treatment plant, greeneries and landscaping, and compound wall and entrance gate.
The facilities to be provided at the Cutbona minor fishery harbour are jetty of 225 mts in length, training wall of 483 running mts at the river mouth, navigational aids, improvement to existing approach road, electric power supply and distribution including general lighting, fresh water supply and distribution, and toilet block.
The facilities to be provided at the Chapora minor fishery harbour are training wall of 792 running mts at river mouth, 100 mts jetty with 6 mts width, dredging, navigation aids, land reclamation, revetment, fish handling and auction hall, fish loading area, approach road and internal road, administrative office, fishermen’s gear shed, net mending shed, boat repair workshop, toilet block, fresh water supply and distribution system, drainage/ sewerage system and solid waste disposal, waste water treatment plant, electric power and lighting system, parking area for vehicle, radio communication centre, firefighting equipment, rainwater harvesting, restaurant, security guardhouse, greeneries and landscaping and compound wall and entrance gate.
The Navelim MLA added that the government has received a proposal for construction of a fish market at Malim, and the public works department has been requested to tender the work. “The work for market will be undertaken after obtaining the necessary clearances from the concerned departments,” he added. Furthermore, Furtado said that altogether 3,357 fishing boats have been registered with the department of fisheries. “The marine surveyor checks the seaworthiness of the mechanised fishing vessels,” he added, stating that the extension staff of the department checks the safety equipment aboard these boats” added Furtado.
He further stated that the income of the fish breeding farm at Ela during the year 2013-14 was Rs 3,73,600, while that of the fish breeding farm at Anjunem for the same year was Rs 3,10,000. He also noted that the prawn hatchery in South Goa is presently not operational.
