PANJIM: In a bid to ease traffic chaos in Porvorim, Goa Traffic Police, Goa Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC), PWD officials and MLAs Rohan Khaunte and Siddharth Kunkalienkar chalked out a new traffic management plan, which brought a huge sigh of relief to commuters.
Following repairs of the service road near WRD to Sai Circle, traffic was diverted via the internal road in Porvorim, which brought traffic to standstill on Saturday and Sunday. Hundreds of vehicles were seen queued up from O Coqueiro junction to Sai Service.
However, on Monday, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte called GSIDC officials, traffic police and PWD officials, and held a meeting with GSIDC vice-chairman Siddharth Kunkalienkar and others. Following the meeting, the road along the Sai Service Circle was opened for light vehicles, from both sides – Panjim and Mapusa.
“The traffic chaos at Porvorim is a failure of government machinery of traffic police, PWD and GSIDC to co-ordinate,” Khaunte said. He said the main road has been thrown open for traffic and once the curing of the service road takes place, it will be made available for the public use after a week.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Dharmesh Angle was supervising the traffic diversion and told reporters that heavy vehicles were routed through Karaswada-Amona-Banastarim road, light vehicles via Sai Service Circle and buses through ACDIL school road.
“The repair of service road has been taken up on a war footing, and will take at least 10 days for it to be ready. It will be reopened for the public only after it is repaired,” he said.
