SANGUEM: Members of ‘Awake Goans’, a newly formed NGO led by Amar Naik, has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Officer Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council Pramod Dessai demanding allocation of permanent sheds to the local vegetable and fruit vendors selling their produce in the Curchorem market.
The memorandum submitted to the Chief Officer states that a large number of elderly people hailing from remote areas travel to the Curchorem market to sell locally available agricultural produce like bananas, vegetables and other like products. However, in the absence of any permanent sheds, majority of these vendors whom are senior citizens sit on the footpaths and other available spaces in the market to sell their produce. They have to literally sit in the open area without any shed throughout the day or till they sell their last produce thereby severely affecting their health.
Awake Goans in their memorandum claim that many unauthorised vendors occupy the covered shade in front of the GSUDA complex to sell their wares. However, the village folks despite paying tax to the municipality are forced to sit in the scorching sun to sell their produce.
