The committee inspected all four ‘off-shore’ casinos operating in the River Mandovi and sought more details from casino operators with regards to disposal of sewage and solid waste management. The committee also collected river water samples at different points for examination, where the casino vessels are anchored.
Goa State Pollution Control Board chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that the committee has to submit its report before NGT within the next two weeks.
The committee comprises the director of National Institute of Technology, Goa, or his nominee; a representative of the state environment department; director of National Institute of Oceanography or his nominee; captain of ports, and member secretary, GSPCB.
The committee has to submit the site inspection report to the tribunal every four months. The last site inspection was carried out in October 2014.
Activist Sudip Tamankar had approached the NGT alleging that casinos are polluting the river water. However, the GSPCB in its reply before NGT had claimed that though the river Mandovi water is polluted, the casinos are adhering to all waste disposal directions.
