BELGAUM: While the Belgaum-Goa road via Chorla is almost complete and is gaining popularity among motorists between Belgaum and Goa, the condition of the NH-4A has deteriorated further.
The condition of the 57 kilometre stretch between Khanapur and Anmod via Ramnagar has worsened in the last couple of months as there seems to be no end to the agonies of commuters from both states.
An 84 kilometre section of NH-4A between Belgaum and Goa forms a part of the proposed schemes of widening from four to six lanes under the Prime Minister’s NHDP Phase III programme. This stretch is proposed to be on BOT / DBFOT (toll) basis.
As the part of four laning of the 84 kilometre distance from Belgaum to the Karnataka border, authorities had commenced land acquisition in 2010. In total, 33,94,729 sq mtrs of land has been almost acquired for the four-laning of the road.
Felling of huge trees along the entire stretch which were rendering comfort to drivers by providing cool shade is also complete. However citing that construction of the new road was to be completed on a war footing, the authorities have turned a blind eye to taking up repairs of the dilapidated road, leaving commuters bewildered.
While it is difficult to contact officials for an explanation, it is learnt that the officials themselves are clueless regarding further developments.
