A 24-year-old Nigerian national, under trial at Sada Sub Jail in connection with the rape case, injured himself damaging electrical appliances in the jail premises on Thursday afternoon.
The accused, Obi Okoroafor, who was recently shifted from Margao to Sada-Sub Jail, allegedly damaged live electrical bulbs in the cell and sustained injuries to his hands.
Speaking to media, the jail authorities informed that the under trial was depressed for some time since the time he heard the news of his ailing father in Nigeria.
The accused took some tablets a day prior to the incident in desperation and it appears that he was depressed.
Jail authorities shifted Okoroafor at Chicalim Cottage Hospital and considering his mental status, he was later shifted at IPHC at Bambolim.
It may be recalled that Okoroafor was arrested in connection with the rape of a 25-year-old Australian woman at Canacona on April 17.
In her statement to Canacona police, the woman had stated that they had allegedly passed the night partying together, first at a starred hotel and then a beachside restaurant, before spending the night in a rented beach hut at Palolem.
The next morning, she complained to Canacona police that she had been raped by the Nigerian.
