Asks GSPCB to conduct fresh inspection

PANJIM: Goa Medical College and Hospital has refuted that they were burning human anatomical waste as reported by officials of the Goa State Pollution Control Board and has instead asked that the Board scientists to conduct a fresh inspection.
“We do not burn any biomedical waste in our premises. The anatomical waste (Category 1) is being incinerated in our incinerator which is fully operational since December 2012. It is segregated from other waste prior to disposal in the incinerator,” Dean of GMC, Dr V N Jindal said in his reply.
The Board had sent a notice on May 2 to the medial college alleging gross violation of the provisions of the Biomedical Waste Rules and Environment Protection Act, 1986, through the burning of the soiled waste and human anatomical waste, treated biomedical waste and for not making provisions to dispose the treated biomedical waste.
However, the Dean said that the waste once disinfected could be treated as municipal waste and disposed.
“The other biomedical waste is disinfected in the Ecodas Hydroclave system and does not need to be segregated. The disinfected waste is being disposed in the pits within our premises and shortly we propose to incinerate this disinfected waste in our incinerator (capacity 60kgs/hour). Also, in future we will be installing another incinerator of a higher capacity, government approval for which has already been granted,” the reply reads.
Speaking to Herald, the Chairman of the Goa State Pollution Control Board Jose Manuel Noronha said that they would conduct another inspection as sought by the Goa Medical College and act accordingly in the matter.
