PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday ruled out fears that nationalisation of rivers would restrict rights of the State over the water bodies. He also said the term nationalisation is misconceived.
“All the activities related to the rivers would be vested with State government and there will be no control from the central government as is feared by the people,” Parrikar told the media.
“The term nationalisation of rivers is misconceived, it is not nationalisation of rivers. They are rivers of national importance. Since State government is not in the position to fund the activities like dredging, the Central government would be helping the State with the money,” he said.
Fears have been expressed by certain sections that nationalisation of rivers would mean that the State will lose its control over the water bodies affecting the livelihood of fishermen.
