MARGAO: On August 8, Director of Panchayats Narayan Sawant issued an order posting a full-time secretary at the 11-member Benaulim Panchayat.
The order also effected transfers and postings of panchayat secretaries in three panchayat bodies of Salcete taluka. Till date, however, the Panchayat Director’s order is yet to come into force. Benaulim panchayat has no full-time secretary with the incumbent Secretary Paresh Rane still holding charge of Cavelossim village panachayat.
When Herald inquired with the Salcete Block Development Office to throw light on the implementation of the Panchayat Director’s order, an official said that the Salcete BDO had issued relieving orders to the panchayat secretary following the August 8 Panchayat Director’s order, but admitted that the status quo still continues at the Benaulim village panchayat.
Inquiries with the Benaulim Sarpanch Royla Fernandes confirmed that the panchayat secretary is still holding additional charge of Cavelossim village panchayat. “Benaulim Panchayat still has no full-time panchayat secretary. The incumbent secretary is holding additional charge and attends to Benaulim panchayat only on alternate days. The panchayat is facing serious problems for want of a full-fledged secretary,” Royla maintained.
