No men for the hard grind

Margao:  The daily wage laborers recruitment drive held by the Margao Municipal Council evinced very poor response sending the entire pre-monsoon planning program into a tailspin.
The MMC Chief Officer had organised and invited for interviews of daily wage workers especially for the job of pre-monsoon works around the town. However only 4 men turned up for the interview intended to hire 80 workers. Time for the pre-monsoon work is ticking away and the MMC is now in a tight corner over the hiring.
The job of cleaning drains, cutting bushes, trimming trees and removing the areas of water stagnation still remain to be executed in several areas of Margao. The Margao Municipal Council needs more laborers for these jobs every year, but the class A body never gets the desired amount of workers. Now since only 4 turned up the MMC will have to host interviews again.
The Chief Officer speaking on this issue said “According to the rules the MMC pays Rs. 323 rupees to daily wage workers for a day of work. However the workers get Rs. 500 if they work outside and this may be the reason why few one turned up today. We have written to the Government to make the remuneration Rs. 500 and are awaiting response from them” said Yashwant Tawde.
The MMC now has 220 regular and 60 daily wage workers and needs additional 80 workers for the pre-monsoon work.
