The no-detention policy up to class VIII came up for criticism in the House and the Government assured the Legislative Assembly that it would write to the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) to review the Right to Education (RTE) Act.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that in view of the falling standards in education, the feelings of the House, parents and students would be raised before the HRD Minister, with a demand to review the no-detention policy and bring back the earlier examination formula.
The Opposition had moved cut motions to the Governor address over the government’s failure to take steps in regards to the no-detention policy having an impact on quality of education.
Admitting that this ‘automatic promotion’ had become an issue, the Chief Minister informed the House that at a meeting in New Delhi over consultations on the new national education policy, Education Ministers from various States argued that ‘automatic promotion’ had led to a situation where there’s sharp decline in academic exercise. “I too stand by their views,” he said.
